Lesson Three

Elizabeth sat down at her desk after the long winter break. Seeing her family again was nice but now it was time to get down to business.

She wrote the words on the board with a wave of her wand and waited to see if her class would show.

Robert sat down in class and looked at the board.

Potterwatch? What in Merlin's name was that? Had their professor developed an ego?

Coming into the classroom and taking a seat Lucian read the board and then read it again with a puzzled frown. He disliked the first two and the last one was what? Did their professor name her watch? Or was that something she was forming to watch the students? It couldn't be that right? Looking at all three again, the teen thought about it then scratched his cheek. Raising his hand he volunteered, "Repression."

Elizabeth smiled at the ravenclaw.

" Partially Correct," she said. "Two points to Ravenclaw for that. Though Potterwatch was not something for repression. Does anyone know what it was?"

She was stalling for time, to see if any more of her students would show.

Renee walked down the hallways and finally found the classroom. 'Mental note to self try showing up to the actually school a week before classes start.' She walked into the classroom and saw that there wasn't that many people there. "Hi, sorry I just got to the school a few days ago and had no idea where I was going," Renee said and took a seat near the end of one of the rows.

"Quite alright miss," Elizabeth said with a small smile. "We're just waiting for a few more people to show up actually."

Audrey rushed into class and hoped that the teacher wouldn't take off points. How she'd fallen asleep standing up she'd no clue. Looking at the board, she raised an eyebrow at the first thing. Had that really happened? Muggle Borns had to go through a registry?

She was a little shaken at the prospect, being of muggle birth herself. "Ma'am? Did--did the first thing really happen?" she asked, raising her hand. Death Eaters she remembered reading about in the text book, but nothing about any committees.

"And what's Potterwatch?" she asked, noting the last name of her professor for the first time.

Elizabeth looked up from the board when a young girl walked in--Miss. Edwards she remembered. She frowned, she really did hate taking points but technically class hadn't started yet.

"Two points from Gryffindor for being late," she said; that was fair she thought. "Welcome to class Miss Edwards. To answer your question, yes the committees did in fact happen."

She softened a bit when she saw how shaken the girl was.

Muggleborn? she thought. Not that it mattered or anything, but it was usually those who didn't live in the world from birth that asked the most questions.

"Ah good question Miss. Edwards. What is Potterwatch?" she asked the class. "Five points to whoever can tell me."

Renee thought about it Potterwatch. "Potterwatch kind of makes me think of the last name potter. Could it be watching for anyone with that last name?" Renee questioned she wasn't very sure

Rowyn suppressed the slight shiver that ran through her at the sight of the names. Her father had fostered her interest in history, warning her that patterns tended to repeat. She raised her head and met Professor Potter's eyes.

"Darkness and Holocaust," she responded to her teacher's question evenly.

She suspected the wizarding history books she'd been able to get her hands on were fairly sanitized, but she'd read and studied muggle history as well. Her father had first pointed it out, but she'd seen for herself the parallels between Voldemort's brief reign and Hitler Germany. Voldemort had been stopped before he'd gotten that far.

Elizabeth looked up from the board when she heard someone speak.

"Correct," she nodded but was a little confused on the second part. "How, if you don't mind me asking, do these words make you think of Holocaust?"

After all, Voldemort killed anyone who stood in his way.

"Um," Rowyn generally had trouble explaining her viewpoint of history patterns. "The Muggle-born Registry Act was a lot like Hitler's Nuremberg laws, and the Death Eaters were like the SS and the Gestapo and the German Army all rolled into one." She tried not to think about the Nazi atrocities she'd read about. "My dad said that the ideology was a lot alike too. Hitler hated Jews the way Voldemort hated muggles and muggleborns."

The bell rang.

"I guess we'll have to continue this next class!" Elizabeth said with a small smile. "No homework!" she called after them.

"Thanks, Professor!" Rowyn called as she rushed out of the classroom. She liked History, but even she wasn't Ravenclaw enough to like homework. Besides the class had given her an idea for a poem, and she wanted to get it down before she forgot it.

Rushing down the hallway, she spotted a niche in the wall and quickly ducked into it, pulling out her smallest notebook and quickly transcribing her new work.

"Got to put an end
To all hatreds of men
And women too.
Lest in a thund'rous flash,
The world become as ash,
And still the butcher's bill is due;
Though no one's left to start anew
For the world has paid the cost
and life is lost
To fire and to fools."
